With our doors temporarily closed (but our online shop in full swing!) we thought we’d use some of our downtime to introduce you to the team behind The Flower Folk.
Like many small independent shops navigating these uncertain times, your support whether it’s an order, some kind words or a like or share on social media means so much to the team working hard behind the scenes.
So here we, and hopefully for any budding florists out there this might give you an insight into the world of floristry.
Helen
Helen is the longest serving member of the team aside from owner Pip and is Head Florist and Shop Manager.
Floristry background
I’ve been a florist for over 13 years, enrolling on a floristry course after University. After taking some time out to have my children I secured my role at Flower Folk after approaching Pip when the shop opened. What started as a Sunday role has developed as the business has grown.
Favourite part of the job
Working with great people and getting to know our customers is one of the best things. I also love being able to be creative, it’s something I have really missed during the various lockdowns.
Worst bits
Cleaning buckets! It can be pretty grim when you find a bucket that has been forgotten about!
Favourite flower or plant
My favourite flower tends to change with the seasons. We got some gorgeous Butterfly Ranunculus in just before Christmas, and I think I probably put them in every bouquet I made, but then in the autumn I absolutely adore Dahlias.
Favourite Flower Folk product
It has to be the flowers. The flower stand looking full and colourful is such a wonderful sight. It’s like a giant pick and mix!
Best thing to come out of 2020 for you
The way it has made us think outside the box. It really tested the approach of the business and Pip was amazing at coming up with ideas so that we could keep going despite the challenges.
What Flower Folk product would you send a loved one during this lockdown
Definitely one of our gift boxes. It’s such a sweet way to let them know you care, plus the chocolate is delicious.
Sophie
Sophie is a trainee florist at The Flower Folk and supports Pip and Helen with flower conditioning, preparing bouquets, watering plants and general shop support.
Floristry background
I first started thinking about getting into floristry after taking part in couple of Pip's workshops. I was looking for a career change, so after some advice from Pip I decided to take the plunge and enrolled on the Level 2 Floristry course at Tyne Met in September 2019.
Luckily, I was able to continue from home when the pandemic hit and I gained my diploma in July 2020. Part of the course required me to complete a work placement in a florist which I carried out in the Flower Folk and then Pip then took me on as a trainee florist last year.
Favourite part of the job
I love getting to work with all the gorgeous flowers and foliage Pip chooses, the shop always smells amazing! I also love being able to watch Pip and Helen at work...they both have lots of years of experience so I feel very lucky to be able to learn from them.
Worst bits
The COLD! Working in such a cold environment takes getting used to, but layers and thermals get you through!
Favourite flower or plant
I love Hydrangeas - I had bright pink ones in my wedding flowers 10 years ago. I also love Sweet Peas and Stocks for their amazing fragrance.
Favourite Flower Folk product
There are so many! One of the biggest challenges of my job is trying to not spend all my wages in the shop. If I had to choose, it would probably be the Eucalyptus Soy candle, it smells divine.
Best thing to have come out of 2020 for you
Most definitely coming to work at The Flower Folk. I feel very lucky and grateful to work in Pip's gorgeous shop alongside some lovely people.
What Flower Folk product would you send a loved one during this lockdown?
One of the gorgeous candles along with a bar of chocolate...heaven and perfect for anyone who needs a bit of ‘me’ time.
Lou
Lou is the newest addition to the team, joining in November 2020 just in time for the Christmas rush as administrative support. Her main duties are to deal with customer orders and enquiries.
Floristry Background
I’m the only member of the team who hasn’t trained as a florist but plants have been a passion of mine that has developed over the years. Thankfully, I was employed for my customer and administrative skills, although I do want to try and learn as much as I can from the team as I go along.
Favourite part of the job
I love writing the messages that get included with a flower or gift delivery. It’s such a difficult time right now and I feel quite privileged to be part of these special words. There have been tears at times! I also get a ‘pinch me moment’ every time I walk in to start my shift, it’s such a beautiful place to work and the most amazing smell hits you as soon as you open the door.
Worst part of the job
Honestly, its trying not to spend all of my wages on the stock, its torturous and I'm really bad at it!
Favourite flower or plant?
I love the Asparagus Fern plant, there is something really atmospheric about it.
Favourite Flower Folk product?
So many to choose from but my absolute favourite are the dried flower wreaths. They get snapped up pretty quickly though so if you manage to get one you are very lucky!
Best thing to have come out of 2020 for you?
Aside from spending more time with my family and appreciating a slower pace of life, I have loved seeing a focus on local. Whether that’s supporting local businesses, exploring your local area, (over and over again!) or setting up street What’s App support groups - the sense of community has been really heart-warming.
What Flower Folk product would you send a loved one during this lockdown?
I would send one of our seasonal bunches. They are absolutely beautiful and would definitely put a smile on someone’s face – and I get to write the messages so mine too!
Next month we will focus on a day in the life of owner Pip, but if you have any questions or requests of topics for future blogs please get in touch at orders@theflowerfolk.com
